User loses $32 million in spWETH

On September 27, 2024, a wallet ending in “e57” was drained of 12,083 Spark Wrapped Ethereum (spWETH), valued at $32 million, due to a sophisticated phishing attack. According to security firm CertiK, the stolen funds were transferred to multiple wallets, including 1,750 ETH to “0x105c”, 2,613 ETH to “0x278d”, 3,730 ETH to “0x408d”, and 1,865 ETH to “0xfaf2”. The compromised wallet may belong to F2Pool founder Shixing Mao, but this remains unverified.

Phishing attacks surged in August 2024, with Scam Sniffer reporting a 215% increase and total losses exceeding $66 million. One wallet lost $55 million in a single proxy ownership phishing attack.

Blockaid highlighted the rise of the AngelX phishing software, an upgrade of Angel Drainer, which targets new blockchain networks like The Open Network and Tron. Additionally, Scam Sniffer found that search engines like DuckDuckGo unknowingly featured fake Etherscan sites, leading users to connect MetaMask wallets to malicious links.
